Fancy Dogs!

Who doesn’t love a good hot dog? I have been craving them lately and wanted to make some fancy versions! I got together with my neighbor and we came up with some yummy recipes!

We took a little trip to Surfas in Culver City, a cook’s little dream, and spent lots of money and time! I bought some chorizo sausages and Big City Red hot dogs. I also took the time to purchase some yellow baskets and the cute checkered paper…totally unnecessary but so useful for so many fun meals and projects to come!We put all the dogs on a baguette instead of hot dogs buns and each got its own special “stuff” on top.

The chorizo dog got a two bean heirloom chili ( try this martha recipe, with or without the meat) and shredded cheddar cheese on top.

One of the big city red dogs got caramelized red onion and blue cheese.

My favorite was the take on a chicago style dog. Which normally consists of tomato, chopped onion, a kosher pickle spear, sport peppers, neon relish, yellow mustard, a dash of celery salt served on a poppy seed bun. Our version consisted of chopped tomatoes and onions, dijon mustard, mayo with sriracha, and some homemade zucchini and squash pickles. Maybe not quite there…but it was delicious!

For the fries. Dice up potatoes however you like and spread on a baking sheet with olive oil, cloves of garlic, salt and pepper. Bake at 350 degrees until just crisp.  Sprinkle with chopped parsley and pecorino reggiano cheese. We served it with a truffle aioli ( which was mayo mixed with white truffle oil, salt, and garlic).
